Is Candida Making You Fat?

Scientists may have found a new culprit in our battle against excess fat – the common form of yeast called Candida. This tiny fungus is always with us, both inside and out, but it doesn’t normally cause any problems. However, when things in our system get unbalanced, and the good bacteria in our gut (the probiotics) can’t keep the yeast in check, we may end up with a yeast infection.

Most women have experienced a vaginal yeast infection at least once in our lives, but it’s also possible to have an overgrowth of yeast inside our digestive system without our knowing it. For years, there has been a suspicion that yeast may be the cause of several illnesses that defy normal treatment, particularly fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. Is it possible that yeast is also to blame for our sugar cravings and excess weight?

According to the researchers at the Fibromyalgia & Fatigue Centers in Dallas, Texas, yeast can be linked to a weight gain of over 32 extra pounds, on average. According to their studies, there are three possible reasons why this fungus can cause us to get fat:

1. Yeast can cause sugar cravings. If you’ve ever baked bread, you know yeast likes carbs. If there is an overgrowth of yeast in the digestive track, it can cause almost uncontrollable cravings for carbs of all kinds, especially bread and sweets. Unfortunately, when we give in and eat these foods, the population of yeast gets even bigger, they demand more high-calorie carbs, and the cycle continues. Before long, we’ve added several inches to our waistline and the numbers on our bathroom scale keep going up.

2. Yeast may inhibit the immune system, which tries to destroy the overgrowth of yeast. Researchers are now looking into the possibility that inflammation caused by the battle between the immune system and the yeast overgrowth may suppress thyroid function, and this reduces the body’s ability to burn fat.

3. When yeast causes fermentation of carbs in the digestive tract, the process results in toxic chemicals and gas. The body tries to dilute the toxic waste by retaining water, which can add five to seven inches to the waistline.

To rid the body of excess yeast, many experts advise a change in diet. Drink vegetable juices instead of fruit juice, eat lots of raw and cooked veggies, and eat yogurt every day to add those probiotics to your system. This diet starves the yeast, puts the body back in balance, and has helped many people drop their excess pounds.
