What Is Infertility? A Look at the Meaning of Male and Female Infertility

Infertility is the inability to get pregnant, carry it to confinement and delivery. Male infertility is the inability of a man to get a woman pregnant. The man is said to be impotent. An older term that has similar meaning is sterility. A woman who can’t conceive or a man who lacks the power to impregnate a woman is said to be sterile. As you well know, the direct opposite of infertility or lack of fertility is fertility which is the ability to produce or reproduce.

The key word, “infertile” the root word where infertility is derived means to be unproductive or unfruitful. To use a Biblical term, babies are called the fruit of the womb. The Bible itself uses another terminology “barrenness” to qualify infertility.

Infertility may not be an obstetrics and gynecological problem as we often believe, it is primarily a health imbalance pointing to a deeper internal problem. This is because many infertile couple look normal on the outside but fail to conceive inwardly or deliver. The first law of nature tend to be self-preservation and perpetuation of ones generation or offspring. Reproduction and its organs are the last to get sick even when other organs fail. Inability to conceive may be an early warning or precaution that all is not well.

Fertility doctors have defined, described and classified female infertility under 3 major types:

1. Primary Infertility–If a woman in her reproductive period tries and fails to get pregnant (and deliver) after twelve months of unprotected intercourse. This definition applies in North America (United States and Canada). The Europeans uses a longer time frame. In Europe, If a woman fails to get pregnant after two years of unprotected intercourse, she is said to have primary infertility. These describes women who have never been pregnant and are less or equal to 35. Any age above 35, the time frame is shorter. primary infertility is defined as inability to conceive after 6 months of unprotected sexual intercourse. Many patients and their doctors tend to focus more on this group of infertile women which is far less common than secondary infertility.

2. Secondary Infertility–This is the failure of a mother to achieve subsequent pregnancy after having one or more children in the past. This type of infertility is more subtle and less pronounced in contrast to primary infertility or heart breaking miscarriages. The incidence of secondary infertility is twice that of primary. To date, it is still the commonest type of infertility. People tend to ignore or overlook this type of infertility while advising the couple with one or more children to be content. However, the type that causes the greatest pain, emotional turmoil and grief because it involves loss is the third type.

3. Miscarriages–If a woman fails to carry a pregnancy to confinement in three attempts before the 20th week of gestation. In other words, it is called recurrent abortion but many women prefer to call it miscarriages. Most miscarriages tend to occur before the 13th week of gestation. If a women and or her doctor makes a choice to terminate a pregnancy, the term abortion is used. However, miscarriages takes different form but the kind that is classified as infertility is recurrent miscarriage. Approximately 10 to 25% of first trimester pregnancies end in a miscarriage. Fertility doctors classify three or more miscarriages as infertility.

The definition of infertility is described differently for men and women. Female infertility is failure to conceive or carry gestation to fruition. On the other hand, male infertility means lack of potency or inability to impregnate a woman. Primary infertility is a definition reserved for a woman who has never gotten pregnant before or infertility could be secondary for a woman who had a child or children but can’t reproduce regardless of several tries. Also a woman who has recurrent first trimester spontaneous loss of gestation is classified as infertile.

Like most problems in life, the business of conception is a chance event that involves intricate and delicate process involving multiple steps and factors. The infertile couple or aspiring mother has one opportunity every 30 days to achieve pregnancy during her reproductive period.
