Top 5 Signs Of Ovulation
Getting to know when your ovulation occurs are the first basic step if you are serious about getting pregnant. Finding and pinpointing the day of your ovulation lets you know which are your fertile days in your period. In here I outline the 5 most useful signs that you are about to ovulate, or just have ovulated. In ether case this is useful information for your family planning.
- Rise in basal temperature. A rise in basal temperature occurs just after ovulation, so this sign is only useful to determine the length of your luteal phase to be used to calculate when your next ovulation should occur. The basal temperature is best measured in the morning before getting out of bed. Use a rectal thermometer with a good enough resolution. There are special thermometers for this purpose. Keep a chart of your basal temperature this will allow you to easily spot the increase.
- Increased vaginal secretion. As the ovulation is about to occur there is generally an increase in vaginal secretion, as the mucous membranes are swelling and becoming softer and more moist. In fact, the amount of secretion has been shown to be a direct indication of the chance of conceiving.
- Peak in luteizing hormone. This can be detected in the urine using LH ovulation test sticks. This is probably the most sure way to predict ovulation. The peak in the luteizing hormone preempts ovulation with about 30 hours, so this is your window if you are trying to conceive.
- Increased sexual appetite. Many women experience an increase in sexual interest around the ovulation. While not a sure sign it can give you an idea that something is going on.
- Mittelschmertz. A word derived from German meaning literally middle pain, describing the pain often associated with ovulation. The pain can occur suddenly and last between a few hours and a couple of days. This can be a tell tale sign of ovulation as some women can even tell which ovary produced the egg!
It should be stated that cycle length itself are not a good enough measure to determine ovulation, as the length of the luteal phase may vary up to a week between women with equal cycle length. Using one or more of the signs described here are necessary to get a reliable indication of when your ovulation will occur.
