The Gynecologist in History: A Pair of Famous Gynecologists From the Past

Throughout our education as children and young adults, we often learn about the famous battles of the past, led by famous generals and the powerful monarchs or presidents that stood behind them. Similarly, innovations in space travel, information technology, and prominent leaders of business all frequently have their moments in the spotlight of the media. While these parts of history are no doubt significant, there are just as many fascinating people throughout history who work in the background and deserve a bit of exposition for the roles that they played and the work that they did. Prominent gynecologists throughout history, for example, are just a couple of the many people worth hearing about:

Gisella Perl

In 1907, Gisella Perl was born in Máramarossziget, Hungary, what is in current day Romania. She was a Jewish woman and a gynecologist who was captured and brought to Auschwitz concentration camp. During her time in captivity of the Nazis, she worked as a doctor for the other people living in the concentration camp with her. Although she lost many members of her family in the camp, she was able to save hundreds of her fellow captives’ lives. Specifically, she helped pregnant mothers grapple with their pregnancies under the horrible living conditions. After the war, she lived in a French convent before moving to New York City and continuing her work as a gynecologist at the famous Mount Sinai hospital. She continued to deliver thousands of babies in New York and eventually documented her experiences of living in the concentration camps by publishing an autobiography. She ultimately chose to relocate with her daughter to live in Israel until she passed away in 1988. She remains an icon of strength and resilience in the face of deplorably adverse conditions.

Ernst Ludwig Alfred Hegar

Stepping back a bit further in time, Ernst Ludwig Alfred Hegar was born in Darmstadt, Germany in the year 1830. Growing up with his father who was also a doctor, Hegar followed in his footsteps to become a physician in the military before settling into private obstetrician practice and research. He continued on to become a professor at University of Freiburg for gynecology and in the year 1898 founded his own gynecological journal about the most recent developments in the field, which he titled “Beiträge zur Geburthilfe und Gynäkologie.” He is particularly noted for his early adoption of antiseptic practices as a standard in gynecological procedure. Developing tools like Hegar’s dilator and sign, his work was solidified with the publication of his guide, Operative Gynäkologie. Although he was born almost two centuries in the past, the influence of Hegar’s research and development into the field of gynecology remains an important component of many teachings and practices of gynecologists practicing today.

Although they were not leaders of large nations or iconoclastic religious leaders, these gynecologists were historically significant as individuals who were able to make a difference in the world and affect the lives of those around them, and that is something worth learning about.
