Running And Losing Belly Fat

If you have been wondering about a connection between running and losing belly fat, you are already on the right track when it comes to getting a flatter stomach. Although many people rush out to purchase the latest abdominal exercise gadget machines or weight loss pills, or begin doing never-ending amounts of sit-ups and crunches in the belief that those exercises will “target” belly fat loss, when it comes right down to it, the best way to lose belly fat really is as simple as cardiovascular exercise, and running is one of the best forms.

However, if you really want to learn how to lose belly fat quickly, there are certain considerations which much be made regarding how long and how often you run. A basic rule of thumb is that you should be engaging in brisk cardiovascular activity for at least half an hour a day in order for your body to achieve any real benefit. Look at it this way. Studies have shown that if you weigh approximately 150 pounds, you will lose on average 100 calories for each mile walked (this can be much more than double if that mile was run). It comes down to very basic math then. If you want to increase the amount of calories burned, there are two basic options: you can increase your speed or take on longer distances.

Now for some specific calculations. Running and losing belly fat really do go together, as when compared to walking, many more calories are burned per minute. When running, you can burn approximately 1.5 calories per kilogram of your body’s weight per mile ran. So let’s do a little math:

Say you weigh: 180 pounds

Distance run every day: 4 miles

Calories burned every day: 1.53 x (180/2.2)x4 = 500 calories a day, not bad.

Note that the above calculation includes the conversion from pounds to kilograms.

Have fun playing with the above calculation, and factor it into the amount of calories you consume each day through your diet. Don’t forget that losing stomach fat is as simple as calories in – calories out. Calories in should be easy enough to count if you use an organized diet plan which lists the calorie content of each meal. And now you can measure the calories out part of the equation for each minute of exercise. It shouldn’t be long before you realize that losing belly fat doesn’t have to be complicated at all.

So running and losing belly fat really do go hand-in-hand, as do all other forms of cardiovascular exercise. Use the above calculation to quickly set goals and monitor your progress. Once you have brought down your weight significantly, then it’s perfectly okay to focus on targeted abdominal exercises such as sit-ups and crunches in order to tone the stomach. until then however, as long as you are suffering from excess body fat composition, there is simply no better exercise you can do, minute per minute, calorie per calorie, than running.
