Fear Of Flashing
“Aging has made me internally fearless, except when I have to expose my external shell.”
When I got back from Florida this spring, I went shopping with my daughter and 11 year-old grandson. It was a humbling experience to say the least and not the homecoming I had anticipated.
“Nana,” he said in his trendy Star Wars T-shirt, “we’ve gotta ‘get you out of those’ grandma jeans”. No one wears those high-waist, straight things anymore except old people. You need to get more modern 'cause your face looks young. “
Both flattered and shattered at the same time, I knew my little darling had my best interest at heart so I tried not to drop dead from humiliation right there in the middle of the mall floor. These days who wants to walk around with a grandma that really looks like one? It just isn’t cool.
So I was reluctantly lead to American Eagle Outfitters to get in touch with my 'younger self’. With a new understanding of 'reality bites’, after numerous trials I finally pushed, pulled and squeezed into just the right 'young Nana’ hip- hugging, flare-leg American Eagles. My white cotton Nana underwear was sticking up about two inches above my new look, for all the world to see.
Independent soul that I have always thought myself to be, I never thought I would become a slave to fashion trends, but here I sit, typing in my tight jeans, legs thrust straight forward under the desk and trying not to flash my Shih Tzu sitting on the floor behind me. Somehow I just can’t get used to feeling a constant draft in places usually covered. My fear of flashing the world has been overcome by my fear of growing old in my grandson’s eyes.
Who would have figured?
