Treatment Options For Recurrent Ovarian Cysts – Part 1
When ovarian cysts become recurrent (return from time to time); living with the pain on a daily basis can become a bit of a bind. The pain from ovarian cysts can become unbearable (abdominal and lower back pains), with many women describing the sensation as “ruining their lives.” However, many of the women who live with this disease, could actually be cured.
Most women are led to believe (by their doctors) that there exists little alternative to treating recurrent ovarian cysts other than hormone therapy or surgery. However, this “myth” is not exactly true, as other forms of alternative treatment do exist. Although, we will first explain what the previous mentioned treatments actually consist of, and why they are not desired by most women.
1. Hormone Therapy – is the traditional method for treating functional ovarian cysts (usually fluid filled and harmless [follicular cysts and corpus luteum cysts]), and consists of little more than the sufferer being prescribed the birth control pill to cure the problem. The theory is that cysts are caused by hormonal in-balances where it is believed that with the regular intake of hormones the cysts will be dissolved; thus, fixing the problem.
However, this is not always the case, and does not work for everyone, as it has been documented that this theory is not 100% reliable and may actually cause the cysts to grow larger; thus, creating the problem to become worse. Other side-effects experienced may include: an increased risk of heart attack or stroke (caused by blood clots), breakthrough bleeding (an abnormal uterine bleeding that occurs between regular menstrual periods while taking combined oral contraceptives), and not being able to become pregnant .
2. Surgery – is a another common treatment for this disease (when the cysts are solid filled), and consists of a procedure that can be done in two different ways.
(a) Laparoscopy (laparoscopic surgery) is where tiny incisions are made through the abdomen after being filled with a gaseous substance. The surgeon is able to enter into the cavity to explore the complete area allowing for the removal of either diseased or damaged tissue.
(b) Laparotomy is where a larger incision is made through the abdomen; however, this procedure is usually only recommended when a cancerous cyst is suspected to be prevalent within the area. Due to the larger incision, other organs can be explored at the same time.
Both surgical methods are done under general anesthesia, although the patient recovery time of the second method is usually considered to be longer than that of the first method, and where scaring will be more noticeable. The scaring is one of the reasons why many women are hesitant about having this type of surgery.
Alternative Treatments:
However, there are certain alternative treatments that may also be considered to cure recurrent ovarian cysts, although they are not usually discussed with the patient due to being “an alternative treatment” which are words many doctors believe to be criminal; although, fact is that conventional treatments only tend to paint-over the problem, and not get to the root cause of it.
In “Treatment Options For Recurrent Ovarian Cysts – Part 2” we will discuss both Homeopathy and Chinese Medicine, and their role in curing recurrent ovarian cysts.
