So You Think You Can Retire – Think Again!

Many of the more popular television shows today revolve around “everyday” people who aspire to greatness in some area; can they dance, can they sing, are they smarter than a fifth grader? These shows expand the normal realms of these everyday lives into possible superstardom situations and notoriety, not to mention the satisfaction of accomplishment that is reached by those lucky enough to reach the pinnacle.

This concept can also be applied and considered by those of us who have possibly another aspiration in mind; that of a successful retirement lifestyle. With Baby Boomers reaching retirement age in astonishing numbers, retirement is on the minds of those who have already reached that age, but also those who see that golden age of retirement just on the horizon beckoning with the lure of time, space and an abundance of relaxation.

But like a lot of those alluring situations, the thought and the dream many times will cloud the reality of actually attaining the goal of a satisfying and successful retirement lifestyle. Many of us feel like we have put the seal on that lifestyle dream with the foresight of financial retirement planning and that is certainly true to a very large extent. Having all of our financial ducks in a row so that we can reward ourselves with financial freedom in our retirement is the cornerstone and the sustaining force for a major portion of our retirement superstardom; but not necessarily the total sum and substance of it.

What we most often neglect are those retirement lifestyle challenges and changes that we overlook in our zeal to fly into the life we have always dreamed of during our career and its evolution and involvement. It’s the little things that we will run into when we step into retirement that will slip us up, sneak up on us and throw us for a loop. It is ALL of those little loose ends that will make our retirement less than wonderful if we don’t plan for those as thoroughly and genuinely as we do the financial aspect of our retirement.

First of all we have to redefine just WHO we are. Once we leave the routine of a 9-5 day five days a week, we cease to actually BE that person. We in essence become a new whole persona. Where we were once governed by an alarm clock, a calendar, an appointment book, travel, meetings, etc., etc. – now we may have trouble actually remembering what day of the week it is. The first time it happens, it is amusing, but after a while it may throw our mindset into turmoil. Are we somehow losing the ability to focus sharply? Is our mind getting lazy or cloudy? Of course not! We just have to put different priority into our days and while we need to make sure these priority are relaxing, we still need to make sure they are rewarding and fulfilling.

Retiring successfully is as much of a job as well … a job! Think of all of the legwork you put into your education, your resume, your interview and ultimately your day to day success in meeting and exceeding your career goals. It didn’t happen overnight and neither will a happy fit for your retirement. Your dream job probably wasn’t your first job and your dream retirement may not be what you think it to be, but rather what you design it to be around your retirement trials and errors.

If you have grandchildren, just the freedom to visit or take care of them may be overwhelmingly tempting. That freedom may also be very attractive to your working children who would like nothing better than entrusting the care of their most precious asset to their responsible parents – yes, that’s you! How easy to slide into the “yes” mode. “Why, yes, I have time to pick them up from school; yes, I can come over and pitch in while they aren’t feeling well and; yes, I would love to have them stay for a week while you two go white water rafting with your friends. ” All of these plans are wonderful – in moderation. Too much of a good thing may cause friction and stress on both sides after a while. You may find yourselves in the role of “babysitter” rather than “grandparent.”

This also spills over into volunteerism. Lots of free time, worthwhile causes, calls to join committees, head up fund drives, plan charity functions – you may find yourselves inundated and flattered by all of the attention and give affirmative answers for more time than you may actually have to spare. Take your time – choose your passion for volunteering and enjoy the causes, the events and the rewards.

One of the many, many benefits of retiring is the chance to have a veritable “do over” each and every day. Try new things, meet new people, go new places, stretch yourself out of your comfort zone. There are no boundaries, no checklists, no trying to fit into someone’s preconceived mold of “your” retirement. You have the freedom, the time, the choices and the satisfaction of sculpting your retirement adventure!
