Is Sterilization the Right Contraception Option For You?

For many sexually active adults, the time to have children has passed. Perhaps, in some cases, they are not interested in the possibility of having children, while in others they may have had the number of children they wish to have already. There are many options for those who wish to avoid pregnancy. If you continue to be sexually active, though, there is no method that is 100% effective. So, some choose the option of sterilization as their contraceptive method.

From natural contraception methods to prescription contraception methods, there are many choices available. The fact remains that not everyone is interested in the burden of using traditional birth control. For those that have had the children they want to have already or those that simply do not want children, sterilization is an option. A method that can be employed by either a man or a woman, it is the only way to permanently prevent pregnancy. Though there is some debate the possibility of reversing certain procedures, it is thought overall that all procedures are essentially permanent.

With many new options surfacing through new research, sterilization can be achieved in a variety of ways. The first thing to discuss with your partner is which of you should receive the procedure.

For women, the most common choice is tubal ligation (tying the fallopian tubes, or “having your tubes tied”). This procedure closes off the fallopian tubes so eggs can no longer reach the uterus. Another more recently discovered option for women involves insertion of a metal coil into the fallopian tubes, giving the same result as the tubal ligation.

For men, there is the option of vasectomy. In this procedure the sperm ducts are closed off, preventing sperm from getting through and so preventing fertilization and pregnancy. This procedure is considered relatively simple and low-risk, and is therefore preferred over women’s procedures. However, with new procedures surfacing for women there is a good possibility that in the near future there will be methods available to women that are just as low-risk.

No matter what you opt for when it comes to contraception, from natural contraception to prescription birth control, to sterilization, it is important to make the decision with the advice of your doctor and your partner. If you wish to eliminate the possibility of becoming pregnant, sterilization might be the right choice for you and your partner. Whatever your needs, there are many options to choose from in the realm of pregnancy prevention.
