Compiling a Contemporary Calendar

According to Wikipedia, a calendar is a system of organising days for social, religious, commercial or administrative purposes. This is done by giving names to periods of time (days, weeks, months and years) and the name given to each day is known as a date.

The English word calendar is derived from the Latin word kalendae, which was the Latin name given to the first day of every month.

Once upon a time local storekeepers would generously provide a calendar to their frequent customers. These calendars may have had 12 months to view, while some contained a stapled addition for each month of the year, attached below a ‘chocolate box’ style photograph of some exotic (and presumably unreachable) destination.

Whilst this practice has diminished somewhat with time, some businesses still rely on the calendar to promote their services. The Pirelli tyre company is an outstanding example. Pirelli calendars have become collectors’ items and are highly sought after. Indeed, there is even a Pirelli calendar club in existence.

Few companies would go to the lengths taken by Pirelli, and many modern companies have taken advantage of ‘do it yourself’ opportunities that can be found on the internet to generate personalised calendars for staff and clients.

We must bear in mind that the calendar is the gift that lasts – 12 whole months in fact. To have your clients looking at a desk or wall calendar every day makes it one of the most affordable promotional pieces available to your business.

Calendars can come in any number of sizes. On line calendar companies generally offer a variety of desk and wall options, along with the choice of using their own library photos or uploading your own photos into the calendar. Larger format calendars can adorn workshop or factory walls while the smaller sized formats are ideal for the office environment.

One of the more popular formats is in fact a calendar inserted into a cd case that, when opened, can stand on a desk or table.

Some practical calendars display the date in a moderate sized square that allows the owner to write in important information relevant to the day – very handy for busy mothers with children’s activities to co-ordinate.

Everyone has access to a digital camera these days, and staff shots, company shots or even family photographs make a great personalised touch to advertise your services to your clients or potential clients. Family shots for relatives and friends overseas is a great way to share your year’s experiences – the holiday in the snow or at the beach, and it’s not a bad way to perhaps show off your best photographs as well.
