Best Secret to Six Pack Abs
One of the most sought after goals among fitness enthusiasts is the achievement of a well defined midsection or, a six pack. Unless you are gifted with a wonderful natural body, a six pack shows that you know how to push yourself to get the results you want. But, if it’s as easy as doing tons and tons of sit-ups and crunches, why is it that so few people ever achieve what they want? First, let’s dispel a few myths.
There is a plethora of different abdominal exercises that are very widely used in gyms around the world. Things like crunches, plank pose, sit ups, side bends, and oblique twists are probably used by almost everyone who walks into a gym these days. In addition, there is a plethora of new devices sold on television that target the abdominal muscles. Each of these devices promise the world in a few short easy minutes per day. We see models, smiles on faces, barely straining doing a few easy motions and somehow we believe that it will be the same for us. So why is it that these exercises and machines don’t always work as well as expected?
It is only fair to say that almost every single abdominal exercise out there has SOME benefit. They will almost all strengthen your abdominal muscles; however some are far better than others. But, having strong abs is not synonymous with having a six pack.
For example, have you ever seen a tough man contest? These men bounce cannon balls off of their abdominal region at times! Their midsection is as strong as it gets, yet there is hardly ever one of these people who looks like a ripped body builder. Conversely, take a look at professional athletes, boxers for example. Boxers have a very strong midsection as well but you almost always see well defined abdominal muscles. So what is the difference?
The answer lies in one word….FAT. There is a layer of fat covering your muscles that you must shed in order to see them! Yes, we all know that fat is the enemy of achieving that ripped look. So why is it that almost every fitness magazine focuses on the cutting edge new abdominal exercises in order to give you a six pack? We have been taught that the burn we feel when performing many many repetitions is a good thing, and in part it is because you are working your muscles hard. But the burn is simply lactic acid building up and is not really doing anything to burn fat.
Sit-ups burn very few calories. This goes for almost every single abdominal exercise. That is not to say for one second that these exercises are not extremely necessary. However, the secret to getting six pack abs is to lose the layer of fat that is covering them. In addition to diet, that means one simple thing, performing exercises that burn fat.
Short burst, high intensity exercises are one of the best ways to burn fat. If done correctly, they have the ability to burn up to 9 times more fat in just 4 minutes than in an hour of steady state cardio. These high intensity exercises are one of the fastest ways to help achieve a six pack because of their fat burning ability. Instead of performing a very difficult long workout in which you burn many calories and end up hungry, with short burst high intensity exercises your body uses fat as an energy source and not carbohydrates. This helps to eliminate the powerful hunger felt hours after workout.
In summary, you are far better off spending 5 or so minutes on abdominal exercise and the rest of the time burning off the fat that is covering them. The next time you think about spending time doing 3000 crunches, think again. Burn the fat, see the abs.
