Suicidal Thoughts
One month before Amanda Todd’s 16th birthday, she committed suicide due to cyber bullying. To deal with the pain she started to experiment with drugs and alcohol. This not being enough lead to cutting herself. That not being enough she tried to kill herself with overdosing on anti-depressants and drinking bleach. She ended up committing suicide. Her story is not the only one that has ended with suicide. There have been many other children that have committed suicide due to bullying. According to the CDC suicide is the third leading death among young people which is about 4,400 deaths per year.
BULLYING AND SUICIDE
Victims of bullying are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims according to Yale University. Bullying has an increased impact on suicide risk. Bullying can lead to feelings of rejection, depression or anxiety. These are all factors that can lead to children thinking about suicide. Not every person who is bullied will become suicidal but suicide is a natural response and risk factor when someone is being bullied. As parents, it is your job to look for signs that your child is being bullied or thinking of suicide.
WARNING SIGNS OF SUICIDAL THOUGHTS
Depression
Withdrawal
Showing an Interest in Death and Dying
Engaging in harmful activities such as self-injury
Saying goodbye to people
Expressing the concern that they can’t handle things anymore
Commenting that things will be better without them
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Watching for signs in your child’s behavior before it is too late is the best thing a parent can do. According to ABC news, 160, 000 kids stay home from school every day because of fear of bullying. If your child is trying to stay home from school more than normal, look into it. Be aware of what your child is doing and trying to tell you. Keep the lines of communication open and talk to them about what is going on at school. These are all simple things you can do as a parent to stop bullying and suicide from happening. There are instances where a parent will not know or see any signs of suicide. It is important to know that every child is different in how they deal with pain. Be aware of your children and what they do in and out of school
Feeling suicidal does not make a person weak or flawed. It just means that they are having more pain than they can deal with. Time and the right support can help anyone get through the suicidal thoughts and pain.
