Can Depression Be Deadly?
There are a lot of misunderstandings when it comes to depression. It’s not considered life threatening in most people. In fact, there is still a stigma attached to the disease. The general idea is that it is either a way of seeking attention or some weakness in the person suffering.
It’s odd that we react that way to a disease that could kill. We don’t tell someone with heart disease that it’s all in their head and they can get better if they put their mind to it. Why do we do so with depression? Perhaps it’s because it is a less visible condition. It can certainly be deadly.
Heart Attacks: There is clinical evidence that heart disease can be a complication of this problem. If anxiety is added to it, the risks are even higher. Some causes for the disorder are chemical in nature, which can have a profound influence on the rest of the body.
Less Concentration: That sounds like a mild problem, but in the right set of circumstances it can kill more than just the patient. Think about it; if you are driving and having difficulties concentrating at the tasks involved, you could find yourself in a serious car accident.
Lower Immunity: As mentioned with heart disease, these conditions have a profound affect on the entire body. Lowered immunity could lead to an increased likelihood of infection, catching viruses, etc.
Strokes: Any time there is a risk for a heart attack, there is a risk for a stroke or other rupturing of blood vessels. The increased pressure can cause an arteries to break in the brain and in other areas.
Suicide: Of the roughly 33,000 people who commit suicide in the U.S. on a yearly basis, eighty percent are directly or indirectly caused by depression or anxiety.
It is likely that the people who suffer from these conditions could have avoided them if treatment had been sought in a timely manner. It’s always better to resolve a problem when it is fixable than to wait until something nasty happens before mentioning it.
If you or a loved one has any of the symptoms for either problem, seek immediate help. Your family doctor can send you to the right specialist who will pinpoint the problem. Discuss your personal situation freely, and help the specialist find the right treatment plan for you. This could involve prescriptions, counseling or even herbal remedies, based on your needs.
