The Suicidal Person

Often we are faced with such situations in our life that lead us to think that we do not want to go on and we might think of ending our lives. This thought of committing suicide is quite persistent in few. A person commits suicide when he or she ends one’s own life willfully. Suicide is a global phenomenon and is increasing its toll in India. India has witnessed an alarming rise in the number of committed suicides during the last few years. Approximately one million people worldwide are reported to commit suicide annually. India alone contributions to more than 10% of suicides in the world.

Suicide has devastating consequences to all associated to the person who committed suicide. It is a traumatic experience for the surviving family members, co-workers or classmates. It is considered a sin or immoral act in many religions and on the other hand, some cultures have viewed it as an honorable way for example, Hara-Kiri was a form of suicide common in Japan in the nineteenth century performed for the sake of personal honor.

Suicide is completed by males three times as often as females, but attempted by females three times as often as males. Suicidal behavior in most of the cases is a sudden reaction to a stressful situation resulting from frustration, depression or anger. Suicide is not an option which is chosen willingly, but it happens when the pain exceeds the resources for coping with pain. When one feels suicidal, it does not mean he is a bad, crazy, weak or a flawed person. It does not mean that the person who feels feels suicidal really wants to die, but it indicates that he / she experiences emotional pain which outweighs the individual’s coping strategies and resources for dealing with that pain. Will power has nothing to do with it. One experiencing suicide ideation, may struggle to be heard or understood. People who commit suicide usually show clear signs of their intent beforehand, either in significant changes in behavior, previous attempts or by actually expressing intentions of ‘ending it all’. Because of these facts, it is clear that any expression of suicidal thoughts or actions should be taken seriously. Suicide victims are self-rejectant which comes from accumulated failures.

The personality pattern associated with it is characterized by depression and anxiety, by feelings of inferiority, by a belief that the situation is so hopeless that the person is completely helpless to cope with it, by the belief that members of the social group consider him useless and by marked feelings of guilt and shame which have lead to self-contempt. Some people do not really wish to die, but instead want to communicate a dramatic message to others concerning their distress. Psychology can play an important role in helping us understand, prevent and help those who are thinking of or who have attempted suicide.
