The Necessity of Outbound Training

Businesses operate at breakneck speeds today – every aspect, every department, every industry, operate under the maxim of ‘time is money’. Openings are looking to be filled as soon as possible, eligible candidates hired as soon as possible, expected to make a significant impact as soon as possible or find a replacement and repeat steps as soon as possible. The benchmark is high, the anticipations are high and the consequences of failure can be harsh. We live in a culture where ‘efficiency’ is the alter at which every employee sacrifices. Consequently, employees find themselves feeling the pressure of having a sword swinging over their life ready to decapitate their careers if they make one false move. The margin for error is small and the tolerance very low.

Enter Outbound Training, otherwise tactically called Experiential Learning. In simple terms, this is the process of subjecting employees to a series of simulated outdoor activities and challenges that provide an avenue for the improvement or enhancement of their individual or group skills or talents, while developing traits that they are generally deficient in. The idea of experiential learning through Outbound Training focuses more on the ‘process’ of learning through innovation and adaptation than the actual accomplishment of the goal itself. This is often not the case in modern business settings where incredible emphases are placed on ‘getting things done’. While this may have its short-term advantages, on the long run it takes its toll on the employee causing a burnout. Outbound Training negates this by placing the employees in a more candid, less intimidating outdoor environment where the challenges are very different but also where the consequences are minimal and not job threatening. The employees feel more relaxed in trying to achieve goals, functioning with more freedom, more creativity and less fear of consequence. This creates a situation where one operates at above optimum performance level.

In many ways, the principles of Outbound Training are very natural and intuitive. In fact we follow its principles throughout our lives and we’re not aware of it. Lets use an illustration: When someone first learns to ride a bike, we don’t assume that they are going to master it just from reading a book on how to ride bicycles. While the book can be very informative and give very helpful instructions on the dynamics of bike riding, there are numerous intangible aspects to learning that a book can never provide – the physics of momentum, maintaining the center of gravity between our bodies and the bike, overcoming gravity, etc. are all such aspects that only the actual activity of riding a bike can provide. In the same manner, Experiential learning through Outbound Training provides incredible and intangible avenues of learning that will help an employee to develop in numerous facets of his skills and work ethic.

Outbound Training is considered a valuable tool in today’s urban business culture where every company is in the race to successfully reach the top of the business hierarchy through giving their employees the edge to overcome the hurdles of the job.
