Teenage Pregnancy: Rise and Fall of Rates

Teenage pregnancy is not just a problem within the family. It has a greater impact – up to the economy of the country, or it is also the other way around. It is also more likely that a teenager becomes pregnant even at her young age because of the economic condition of her country that affects her way of living and perception.

The Centers for Disease Control talked about how educational attainment and financial instability of the family is a leading factor for the increased rates in teen births. They also added that single parenting and school performance has a contribution influence on it, too.

There are also instances that, regardless of family background and economic strata, a teenager would engage in pre-marital sex because of curiosity and peer pressure. Introduction to illegal drugs and alcohol consumption also plays a vital role in this matter. Mostly, teenagers who are sexually vital are also active in drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes.

A female ranging from 15-19 years old and is already having her own baby is still in the category of teenage pregnancy. The country that is ranked number one for this is the United States of America (USA) having the percentage of 52.6 (as of year 2015).

Remarkably, the frequency of pregnancy among teens was higher before the 1980’s but during these times; these girls are getting into marriage and will have husbands. While after that time, it has started decreasing however, most of them have no partners in carrying out their responsibilities as a parent.

The reason behind this reduction in number in the recent years has not been bluntly stated. But, it is believed that this is because of the introduction of contraceptive (pills, condoms, etc.) and forums about the disadvantages of being a parent at an early age and even educating young teens on how to have a “safe” sexual intercourse .

There is also a possibility that this drop is due to the ability of either male or female to wait until they are in the right age to engage to these kinds of things.

On the other hand, it is important to note that these pregnancies – out of 100 percent, 77% is unplanned. Moreover, 17% of these occurrences are not first-timers.

In the United States, only 60% will be able to successfully give birth, 30% will be in abortion, and 15% will be ending in miscarriage.

Governments in any countries are trying to even reduce these figures, if not being able to eradicate it completely, by all means. Sex Education is being part in the school curriculum as early as in the 6th grade to already introduce to the children at young age its pros and cons. It is not to encourage them but rather to inform them what is behind this problem and how to avoid them in a situation that they can not yet handle the consequences.

This phenomenon is not only opening us to the fact that having your own family at the wrong time and at an early age is disadvantageous for you. It is also giving us the conception that getting pregnant is easy. That when you’ve had an intercourse and not being able to use protection will make you pregnant, what is not taught to us that is it is not easy as that.
