Inequicate Chewing Can Cause Many Health Problems

How long we chew our food before we swallow it can be a decisive factor in whether or not we properly utilize the nutrients from it for optimum health and energy.

To many, the chewing process is simply breaking up the food into smaller particles and mixing it with saliva, so that they can swallow it. But it is not that simple.

During the chewing process, when saliva mixes with the food, the digestive enzymes in the saliva (lipase, amylase, and ptyalin) start the breakdown (digestion) of fat and starch, which continues even after the food leaves the mouth. Starch is found in eggs and other baked goods, grains (oats, corn, barley, buckwheat, etc.), beans, vegetables and bananas. Saliva also coats the food for better protein digestion. In addition, saliva has antibacterial properties.

If the food is not chewed well, thoroughly mixed with saliva and broken down into smaller particles, than hydrochloric acid (produced by the stomach for protein digestion) and digestive enzymes from the intestines and pancreas can not reach the inner parts of the nutrients and these will be lost. If the enzymes can not get the job done, then the harmful bacteria in the intestines will take over and finish the task, producing as a result excess gas, bloating and other digestive disturbances.

But this is not the only problem. The bacterial action can also cause a condition known as leaky gut syndrome, which means literally that the intestines becomes leaky and permeability increases, allowing easy passage of the partially digested food particles through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream – a process that does not occur in healthy intestines.

Since these food particles are not small enough to be recognized and used by the body, they provoke immune system reaction / allergies, meaning that the immune system thinks they as foreigners and attacks them to eliminate them. Over time this can produce infection and pain in various parts of the body, including the intestines and the joints.

It will also mitigate the immune system, so that it can not effectively do its job of destroying foreign invaders, such as bacteria, parasites, yeasts, as well as cancerous cells, which may proliferate in the body, causing all kinds of problems, if go unchecked.

You may get away with inadequate chewing if you have a strong digestion and can produce more digestive enzymes to reach all of the nutrients in the food; but not for long. Occasionally this capacity will be diminished and may lead to the problems described above.

With adequate chewing, the digestion and utilization of nutrients has become very efficient, the body feels light, and energy increases. Also, the more we chew the more oxygen is delivered to the brain for better mental functioning.

So, it’s essential to relax at mealtimes and thoroughly chew each mouthful of food (about 35-50 times or more) for better health.
